Two Young Men Killed in New Year’s Day Collision in Preston

Two young individuals tragically lost their lives in a vehicular accident on New Year’s Day in Preston. William Herbert, 16, from Howden, and Olly Mitchell, 18, from Ellerton, were involved in the fatal crash, and police are offering support to their families during this difficult time.

The collision occurred around 1:20 p.m. when a grey Volkswagen Golf collided with a black Vauxhall Grandland. William Herbert was pronounced dead at the scene, while Olly Mitchell later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Two other passengers in the Vauxhall were injured: a 16-year-old girl remains in critical but stable condition, and a 17-year-old boy is in serious but stable condition. A 62-year-old man in the Vauxhall was hospitalized, but his injuries are no longer life-threatening. The driver of the Vauxhall, a 34-year-old woman, sustained an arm injury, and two other passengers suffered minor injuries.

The 17-year-old driver of the Volkswagen has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police have released the names of the deceased and are requesting privacy for their families during this heartbreaking time. They are urging anyone with information or footage related to the crash to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
