Dartmouth Mourns Loss of Renowned Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Edward Klein
The Dartmouth community is mourning the unexpected loss of Dr. Edward Klein, a highly respected orthopedic surgeon, who passed away on January 1, 2025, at the age of 57 due to complications following a sudden cardiac arrest. His passing has left a significant void in the hearts of his family, patients, and colleagues.
Dr. Klein, who spent nearly three decades serving the Dartmouth area, was known not only for his surgical expertise but also for the compassion and dedication he showed to his patients. Throughout his 29-year career, he built a reputation as a physician who combined technical proficiency with genuine care for the well-being of those he treated.
Born in New York City in 1967, Dr. Klein pursued his medical education at the prestigious New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. After graduating, he completed his residency at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he developed the skills that would define his career. He went on to serve at Saint Anne’s Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital, further cementing his commitment to the community.
In his practice based in North Dartmouth and New Bedford, Dr. Klein specialized in treating joint pain, limb pain, osteoarthritis, and other orthopedic conditions. Patients who sought his care often described him as more than just a doctor—many considered him a confidant and trusted advisor. Longtime patient Margaret Sullivan said, “He wasn’t just my doctor; he was my confidant. Dr. Klein made me feel heard, cared for, and respected. I trusted him with my health completely.”
Dr. Klein’s colleagues also expressed deep admiration for him. Dr. Lisa Patel, a fellow orthopedic surgeon, reflected, “Edward was more than a colleague; he was a mentor and a friend. Known for his warm smile and sense of humor, Dr. Klein cherished his time with loved ones, often sharing stories of his childhood in New York and his adventures exploring the New England coastline.
The news of his sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from both patients and colleagues. On social media, many shared stories of how Dr. Klein’s care changed their lives. A memorial service to celebrate Dr. Klein’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6, at 2 p.m. at the Saint Anne’s Hospital Chapel in Fall River, MA. In lieu of flowers, the Klein family has requested that donations be made to the American Heart Association in his honor, reflecting his lifelong commitment to advancing health and well-being.
